When I was growing up in Southeast Asia in the 70's, Muhammad Ali and Pele were in the headlines. The 80's featured Joe Montana and Michael Jordan. The 90's brought back Jordan with a different number. Right now, Bonds is in the headlines whether it be for the good or the bad. Right now, Bonds is the most influential.
